Paul Gauguin
Portrait of Meijer de Haan
c. 1889-1890
Gauguin has emphasized the penetrating eyes and large hands of the Dutch artist, Meyer de Haan (1852-1895), with whom he painted in Le Pouldu, Brittany. The inclusion of the bird may be intended as a visual pun, since "haan" means rooster in Dutch.
