Portrait of Gertrude Leduc

1940
Leduc was already in his mid-70s when he painted this affectionate portrait of his niece, the daughter of his younger brother Ulric. Leduc painted few commissioned portraits, most of his portraits being of friends and family members. In a preparatory drawing for this work, Gertrude wears a simple housedress, but in the painting she is dressed in a green evening gown with pearls and silver shoes. She demurely holds her clasped hands in her lap. A framed canvas, undoubtedly one of the artist's landscapes, occupies the upper-right corner.
