Portrait of a Man

c. 1520
This is likely the left half of a diptych – two panels hinged together – the other probably depicted the sitter’s wife. The man is tightly framed in a box-like space; the shadows cast on the wall behind accentuate the sense of shallow depth. Playing with the ideas of illusion and reality, his hand appears to rest on the edge of the picture frame – as if the painting and the real world were part of the same space.
