Takatahara was a northern Ngāi Tahu chief who fought in the 1827 to 1839 wars with Ngāti Toa. During these battles, he allegedly killed Ngāti Toa chief Te Pēhi Kupe at Kaiapoi in 1829 or 1830. In 1900 a monument to Takatahara was erected at Wairewa (Little River).
