Portrait of a Life Cast of Piuraki/John Love Tikao (painted), Aotearoa New Zealand

Category:
Piuraki (John Love Tikao) was captured along with his family in 1832 by Ngāti Toa at Kaiapoi and later joined the crew of a whaling ship en route to Europe. He spent several years in France and England and was reportedly proficient in seven languages. Piuraki returned to Aotearoa in time to negotiate and become one of the signatories of the historic Treaty of Waitangi in February 1840 between the Māori and the British. The knowledge Piuraki gained of European commerce proved invaluable; well aware of the value of land in European terms, he was actively opposed to land sales.
