Portrait of a Life Cast of Matoua Tawai, Aotearoa New Zealand

Category:
Matoua Tawai’s identity is revealed by his elaborate tā moko (incised facial tattoos). Scholars have deduced that he was of paramount lineage on his paternal and maternal sides (signified through the triangular area on his upper forehead): traverse lines on the left of his nose denote his paternal heritage as Ngāti Kahungunu, lines on the right indicate his maternal heritage as Tūwharetoa. Vertical lines in front of double scrolls on his cheeks indicate his elevated rank, while the marks in front of his ear, only visible on his right profile, reveal that he was in charge of a fleet of canoes.
