Marc-Aurèle de Foy Suzor-Coté

Onontaha

1915
This portrait of a young Haudenosaunee woman from Quebec was commissioned by J. Omer Marchand, a renowned Montreal-based architect. Although the sitter looks directly at the viewer, her posture suggests she is uncomfortable being the subject of attention. Unlike Suzor-Coté's many artworks of rural Quebec archetypes, this sensitive portrait captures the model's individual character.
