Takao Tanabe

Nude Landscape I

1959
Tanabe began his first series of “White Paintings” in 1956. Rejecting full colour, he used white sparingly and thinly at first, but introduced colour in later paintings. The semicircular motif appearing throughout this series became a signature element of his compositions. While Tanabe initially had a non-figurative approach, human and landscape forms emerged in his process, seen in the upper torso of a female figure visible in this painting.
