Tom Thomson

Northern River

1915
Thomson affectionately referred to this painting as his "swamp picture." It is dominated by a screen of black trees, an unusual colour for the artist, which partially obscures our view of the winding river flowing into the background. This motif reappears in many of Thomson’s paintings and those of other Group of Seven members who favoured a more decorative aesthetic.
