Linked together thematically rather than formally, the photographs in this series add a further archaeological element to the video W.E.S.T.E.R.N. Created by Pauwels using historical images taken or collected by her grandfather, the prints are displayed as objects of evidence, snippets and fragments that both help us make sense of, and further complicate, the video projection. As still images, they allow space and time to ponder the events on the screen while also evoking the sensation of digging through a box of memorabilia and stumbling upon something unexpected, unnerving or altogether surreal.
