Adolphe Vogt

Niagara Falls

1869
In this painting of Niagara Falls, Vogt expresses a new sense of scale and depth. His dramatic use of light and shade creates a feeling of the sublime, which contrasts with the otherwise thunderous waters of the Falls. Vogt was a founding member of the Society of Canadian Artists. He died at the young age of 29.
