George T. Berthon

Mrs. John Beverley Robinson

1845
In 1844 Berthon settled in Toronto – then home to only a handful of professional artists – and opened a studio that would be frequented by members of the city’s most prominent families. This canvas, portraying a young woman who has apparently paused briefly during a promenade, is among his finest works. The artist has meticulously rendered the subject’s delicate features, the heavy blond ringlets of her fashionable coiffure and her elegant, dark-blue evening gown, mobilizing all his talents in the depiction of his model.
