Lucy Tasseor Tutsweetok

Mother and Children

1991
Category:
This sculpture tells the story of a family. In the artist’s words, it “shows a mother and her children. The children have caught some ptarmigan, and the family is going to eat them inside the igloo.” Tasseor’s chosen type of stone is difficult to carve, and her subtractive process is minimal, involving carefully rendered cuts and scratches on the surface of a stone left largely as she found it. The artist’s choice of raw material is highly significant: the selection of the stone and her response to its pre-existing form contributes to the beauty and simplicity of the work.
