Adrien Hébert
Montreal Harbour
c. 1927-1930
Category:
Hébert broke radically from the picturesque art of his contemporaries, believing that painting in Quebec had become “mired in an ostentatious traditionalism.” His interest lay in painting scenes of modern life, including this bird’s-eye view of ships in the Montreal harbour – a subject close to his heart. The sharp diagonal and vertical lines set against the smoky background give the painting its energy.
