Dominique Rey

Monarch

2011
Dominique Rey considers nature as a site of transformation, release and free expression. In this series, her subjects are androgynous humanoids whose bodies have been altered using hosiery, spandex, polyester stuffing and fauxfur appendages. These beings were inspired by various interpretations of the myth of Erlking – a maleficent fairy who personifies the forest’s force and energy. Frolicking in the wilderness, Rey’s characters transgress a number of formal and metaphorical states of being – reason and the irrational, form and formlessness, misery and beauty – and embody the primal and seductive, yet erratic, power of the natural world.
