Mining and Char Fishing

2006
Category:
In this drawing, two interdependent activities – flying a charter plane to the lakes, a trip subsidized by the mining industry, and traditional char fishing – are included on the same picture plane. This conceptual technique of showing different moments in time and different geographic regions together in one drawing is a means of creating connections and, perhaps for Noah, providing a more accurate representation of everyday life in Nunavut. As Noah recalls of the fishing trip: “During one of our homeland visits, my late uncle Samson Quinagnaaq enjoyed catching char with his kakivak [traditional fishing spear].”
