Micmac Indians
c. 1850
Category:
A portrayal of Indigenous peoples that includes a host of details, this painting – of which several variants exist – is one of the jewels of the Gallery's collection. The artist has meticulously depicted all the smallest features of the figures and their garments, but also those of the wigwam, canoes, and various utensils and accessories of everyday life. Rather than a literal representation, it offers one artist's impression of the Mi'kmaq (Micmac) lifestyle.
