Miasma / Hyena and the Valve
1988-1989
Category:
Displayed with its companion Wild Nights / The Unswept Floor, this installation draws from scientific, artistic and literary sources to question cultural constructs around gender and sexuality. Both hyenas and molluscs were historically associated with “abnormal” sexuality or ambiguous genders. They appear here alongside a woman encircled by a corset-like bone structure, speaking to the limits of idealized femininity and traditional depictions of passive female subjects.
