Hans Eworth

Mary Neville, Lady Dacre

c. 1555-1558
Mary Neville (1524 – c. 1576) sits next to a portrait of her first husband, Thomas Fiennes, Baron Dacre, executed for manslaughter years before. Since remarried, she chose this image to commemorate both her loss and her efforts to have her husband’s estates – forfeited at his death – restored to their children, as was done in 1558. Pausing from her reading to make notes, she is the embodiment of a learned, dignified and virtuous wife. Carefully depicting the numerous objects, Eworth emphasized the reality of the scene to heighten our engagement.
