Barbara Morgan

Martha Graham, War Theme

1941, printed c. 1945
Reaching expressionistically into space with the thrust of her body, the modernist dancer Martha Graham suggests the shape of a machine gun. Barbara Morgan's photograph was part of a collaboration with William Carlos Williams, who was writing a poem on the Spanish Loyalist war. The photographer, poet, and dancer all met in Graham's studio, where Morgan arranged the lighting to convey the sense of a bomb exploding. Morgan used the lighting to enhance volume, seize movement and express an idea in much the same way that Graham used her body to inform space.
