Charles-Nicolas (the Younger) Cochin

Marquise de Pompadour in a Scene from "Acis et Galatée"

1749
A draftsman and engraver, Charles-Nicolas Cochin the Younger was a prolific illustrator who also took an active part in the administration of the arts under Louis XV. The medium of gouache is rare in the artist's work. Exquisitely executed, it is the sole original work that bears witness to the amateur and private theatre flourishing at the King's court in Versailles between 1747 and 1750.
