Mariner 9

2012
This digitally generated panoramic view of Mars set hundreds of years from now offers a scene of vast desolation. Remnants of probes and spacecraft slowly and repetitively move their mechanized arms or blink intermittently. Future Mars is filled with the detritus of the past: space junk left to decay as the planet gradually becomes a techno-landfill site. This utopian/dystopian setting offers the opportunity to reflect on the economies and ideologies driving space exploration, such as tourism, colonialization and resource extraction. “Within all of my work,” the artist suggests, “I’m interested in creating a kind of contemporary or future sublime: landscapes which are arresting and beautiful but equally unnerving.”
