Toying with the spontaneous spirit of street photography, Stephen Waddell's images frame events and situations that seem staged for the camera. Waddell takes numerous shots of his chosen scenes to subtly enhance auxiliary elements. In this case the artist observed an evidently homeless man walking around a tree outside his studio. Struck by the red sash and the chiaroscuro-esque cover of light and shade, Waddell only later noticed the dagger in the man's left hand. "I wanted the image to resemble figures and compositions I had seen in Piero della Francesco paintings in Arezzo," he suggests of this long vertical picture.
