Rome and Venice in the 18th century were important centres for caricature, a type of drawing much sought after by English travellers on their Grand Tour. Giambattista drew hundreds of caricatures, which were collected together by his son Domenico, who saved them in albums and used them as an inspiration and a source of imagery for his own satirical works.
