John Hamilton Mortimer

Man Attacking a Monster

c. 1775
Working in a pen style derived from 17th-century Italian artists, Mortimer's fantastic imagination found its perfect expression in a series of drawings of monsters, in which the creature is given a delightfully whimsical expression and individuality. Mortimer was celebrated in his own short lifetime, and his virtuosity as a draughtsman is apparent in this unusual combat, where the viewer's sympathies are entirely on the side of the engaging monster.
