Maba-l-Bala Rugy (of Power in Darkness)

2013
Category:
Australia is home to one of the oldest civilizations, yet when colonists arrived there they considered the land empty. Mellor’s drawings juxtapose two different views – the real presence of Aboriginal people (often rendered in colour) within the blue-and-white imperialist landscape. The work also references prominent stars and celestial bodies. Mellor observes that, in Australia, “There is a renewed appreciation from astronomers of Indigenous perspectives relating to star clusters and the stories that they generate.” Crystals in the skull, a reminder of our mortality, pinpoint the major constellations in the sky at 6 pm on 16 May 2013, corresponding with the Sakahàn vernissage.
