Love Empire

2005
Commissioned as part of the Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art 2005, the installation "Love Empire" invites the participation of the spectator to complete the work. By mounting the stage and publicly proclaiming love for someone or something, the viewer enters into a community created out of the collective declaration of an emotion. The privacy of the inner sanctum under the stage offers a place where the physicality of love can be pursued concealed from the prying eyes of an audience, or where refuge can be sought. The duality within the installation between private and public enlists exploration of the tensions present in outwardly expressing one’s inner emotions.
