Looking towards Thélus and Thélus Wood from a Nissen Hut under the Nine Elms

26 June 1919
"Yesterday windy and threatening rain. I had forgotten my pipe under the Nine Elms so I went back in that direction .. In the hut I found part of an unposted letter apparently written by an artilleryman who had lived there. It started - 'Dear Sallie, I am fed up with this bloody country.' When I looked out of the end of the hut on the barrrenness that had stretched before him I could understand just about how he felt. The lack of trees, the upheaval of the ground and the evidences of endless and monotonous labour oppress one, and of course it must have been infinitely worse then." Correspondence, 26-28 June 1919
