In March 1900 George and Mary Reid moved to a new house, designed by George, on Indian Road near High Park in west Toronto. The city’s leading Arts and Crafts architect Eden Smith had already designed and built a home for himself on the same street and numerous other artists, architects and associates would soon follow. Mary Reid’s painting was probably painted near their new home and shows the setting sun illuminating the chimney of a house hidden by the lush foliage in what was still an undeveloped garden suburb.
