Miller Brittain

Longshoremen

1940
Capturing the experience of the Everyman on the East Coast, Brittain depicts a group of longshoremen at the end of their shift. The massive, overlapping figures fill the entire canvas in a style similar to that of the Flemish Renaissance Masters; the use of glazes gives the people a heroic gleam. The cramped composition highlights the individualism of the men through a variety of expressions, movements and gestures.
