Graham Sutherland

Large Vine Pergola

1948
Graham Sutherland became preoccupied with Mediterranean motifs like vine pergolas in 1947 after he first visited the south of France, a place he later made his principal home. The setting also inspired him to lighten his palette in response to its warm southern light.
