Roelant Roghman’s preference for forest views and mountainous landscapes extended into his many drawings, paintings and etchings. While some were indeed taken from nature, many, like this drawing, seem to be a product of the artist’s imagination. This sheet shows a decorative manner that is related to the Dutch Italianates and presents itself as an assemblage of vegetation, staffage, buildings and a stream in a hilly landscape. The artist’s use of wash is characteristically conspicuous and exuberant.
