Pierre (the Elder) Patel
Landscape with the Rest on the Flight into Egypt
1662
The Holy Family rests near a ruin, which symbolizes the fall of paganism before Christianity. As befits his role, Joseph sits to the side, part of the group, but distinct. The setting is at once grand, wild and tranquil; fully developed, it draws us in, to wander through it. Patel’s harmonious and calm landscapes are marked by concern for light and atmosphere, revealing his debt to Claude Lorrain, who pioneered this treatment.
