Frederick Sandys

Landscape with Castle

c. 1859
Like many of his generation in Britain, Sandys struggled with the relationship between art as observation of the world and as an act of imagination. This fictive scene is a synthesis of his studies of clouds and of light and colour in landscapes. Sandys assembled these sources into a personal, if still undeveloped, artistic vision. His temperament allied him with the Pre-Raphaelites, young British artists fascinated with the naturalistic current in the art of the early Renaissance.
