Roelant Roghman

Landscape with a Road beside a River

unknown
Roelant Roghman often made drawings in preparation for paintings and etchings, but some sheets such as this one show so few connections with painted or etched compositions that they equally well could have been intended to stand in their own right as independent works. Indeed, the studied and balanced application of different tones of grey and brown washes brings this peaceful and structured landscape to life.
