John Boyle

Lakeside Park

1970
John Boyle’s stylistic influences span from Vincent van Gogh to commercial signage. Visible in the distance of this work is the Lakeside Amusement Park in Port Dalhousie, Ontario, where the artist has depicted, from left to right, Vladimir Lenin (Russian Marxist revolutionary and communist politician), Louise Michel (French anarchist and heroine of the 1871 Paris Commune), a nude self-portrait, Mick Jagger (rock star), "Chief" Harry Green (of the Saint Catharines Athletics Lacrosse Club), and Grigory Zinoviev (Soviet leader). Like fellow London artist Greg Curnoe, Boyle was interested in sports and political figures, especially those with anarchistic associations.
