Franklin Carmichael

Lake Superior

1929
Carmichael made four trips to Lake Superior between 1924 and 1928, often accompanied by Lawren Harris and, later, A.J. Casson. His treatment of the landscape along the lakeshore is similar to that of Harris at this time, yet his brushwork is much more expressive and his palette is brighter. Carmichael’s experience as a commercial artist can be seen in the overall design of the composition.
