Lawren S. Harris

Lac Maligne, parc Jasper

1924
Continuing his move away from realism, Harris painted flat, faceted shapes of the mountains reflected in the clear, still water of Maligne Lake. With a triangular composition and a focal point near the centre of the canvas, this cool and cerebral painting emphasizes the mystical within nature, its staying power and force. Presented in the Group of Seven annual exhibition of 1925, it was one of the most influential paintings in Toronto of the period.
