F.H. Varley

La place du cheval mort, Monchy

v. 1918
After his arrival in France as one of the official Canadian war artists, Varley followed the Allied armies in the final offensive of WWI. Wartime conditions required he work quickly, making pencil studies and watercolours to capture the aftermath of battles. Dead Horse Square, Monchy is characterized by strong lines that emphasize Varley’s skills as a draughtsman and which allowed him to organize the chaotic masses of bone and ruins into a cohesive composition.
