Jean Paul Riopelle

Knight Watch

1953
In the early 1950s Riopelle’s work moved away from colour taches - dots or blobs. The artist started to intuitively and automatically weave threads of paint through thick applications of paint added with a palette knife. In "Knight Watch" heavy layers of paint that have been applied by brush and palette knife are combined with linear strokes and drippings all over the canvas to create an energized and dynamic surface.
