Karíhstanó:ron [precious metal], Harry J. Smith, Jay Silverheels, Tonto

2005
Category:
This video features the voice of iconic actor Jay Silverheels, taken from a 1960 interview he gave on "The Jack Paar Show". His voice has been transposed over unedited footage of a slow drive along 7th Line Road on the Six Nations Reserve near Brantford, Ontario. A Mohawk from the Reserve, Jay Silverheels' real name was Harry Smith, but he is best known for his role as the Lone Ranger's sidekick "Tonto." Though Silverheels retired from acting in the early 1970s and died in 1980, his appeal has spanned more generations than the actor Chief Dan George. He has had a greater effect on the dominant culture's perception of Native people (rightly or wrongly) than all other Native actors combined.
