Louis Dulongpré

Julie Boucher de La Perrière

c. 1805
Dulongpré was originally known in Montreal, around the start of the 19th century, as a musician, teacher and stage manager, but it is as a pastellist and painter that he is remembered today. While the modelling of the face in this portrait is achieved through surface brushwork, the artist employs a rich impasto to suggest the taffeta of the dress, the lace collar and the fabric of the bonnet, all treated to highly decorative effect. It is one of the finest Canadian rococo portraits in existence.
