Robert Del Tredici has been documenting the nuclear industry since 1979, when he produced an extensive body of work on Three Mile Island, published in book form as The People of Three Mile Island (1980). Since then, he has travelled throughout North America, Europe, Japan and the former Soviet Union photographing various aspects of the Cold War. Three of the prints shown here are from his series At Work in the Fields of the Bomb – also published as a book in 1987 – and were taken during his travels throughout the United States. Other photographs derive from the artist’s travels to the former Soviet Union to visit two key sites: the Soviet Semipalatinsk nuclear weapons test site in Kazakhstan and the Soviet Union’s main plutonium production complex at Chelyabinsk, in the Ural Mountains.
