Oskar Kokoschka

John G. McConnell

1973
The Austrian Oskar Kokoschka was one of the leading Expressionist artists of the twentieth century. This painterly work, composed of vibrant colours and lively brushstrokes, was done late in his career when he concentrated on portraits of famous people and landscapes. The subject is John G. McConnell (1912-1974), who commissioned the portrait. As president and publisher of the "Montreal Star" (from 1953), his achievements and personal success made him a prominent figure in the world of publishing and gained him national recognition.
