Evan Penny investigates contemporary representations of human form in relationship to age-old sculptural traditions. While in the 1970s the artist modelled his busts in clay from direct observation, the monumental "Jim Revisited" is the product of his more recent experiments with new technologies for design and cast-making. This work is based on his smaller sculpture, "Jim" (1985). Penny describes how his earlier portrait "involved a prolonged inquiry into the appearances of Jim the person." "The current work," he continues, "might best be understood as a conversation with that early sculpture and a meditation on the shifting terms of my artistic engagement over the intervening twenty-five years."
