Lawren S. Harris

January Thaw, Edge of Town

1921
Recognized as one of the more melancholic of Harris’ house paintings, this canvas depicts the dwellings in a morass of melting, muddy grey snow. The dreary effect is further emphasized by an impasto layer of paint, which contrasts with the rest of the canvas. Harris’ use of colour evokes a sense of desperation and poverty.
