Godfrey Kneller

James Brydges and his Family

1713
Brydges (1674–1744) is shown with his first wife and their two sons; as head of the family, he is set slightly apart from the others, but the tone is intimate and their strong bonds are emphasized. Capping his quick rise to prominence – possible thanks to a newly won fortune – Brydges would soon be made the 1st Duke of Chandos. His choice of Kneller, the country’s leading portraitist, was almost inevitable. Born in Germany and trained in the Netherlands and Italy, Kneller adapted continental art to British taste, tempering grandeur with informality and directness.
