Isolated Depictions of the Passage of Time

2001
This work is a commentary on the Canadian prison system. Each tray represents one incarcerated Indigenous man, while the various colours of the trays signify different sentence lengths. A television embedded in the centre plays scenes from The Great Escape (1963). This points toward the sculpture’s other inspiration: a 1980 escape from Millhaven maximum security prison in Bath, Ontario, that used a similar stack of trays to conceal the person escaping.
