Ismen Populates the Forest of Saron with Demons

c. 1794
This large and finished drawing is entirely characteristic of the artist’s highly ambitious and elaborate graphic style, indebted to past masters such as Michelangelo, Raphael and Guercino. The artist, in a witty way, apparently intended the drawing to imitate the permanence of an engraving. It illustrates a subject from Tasso’s epic poem "Jerusalem Delivered", relating how the magician Ismen populated the Forest of Saron with monsters and spirits to frighten away the Christian soldiers who intended to use the wood to construct war machines for an assault on Jerusalem.
