William Blake

Introduction for "Songs of Experience"

c. 1815-1826
The youthful, piping shepherd from "Songs of Innocence" has become, in "Experience", the Ancient Bard or Prophet, who calls on Earth, the symbol of fallen man, to awake from materialism and turn again to the free life of the imagination. Against a dark night sky powdered with stars, we see Earth as a female figure floating on a cloud at the bottom of the page.
